Board 1-12
Board 13-20
Board 21-24
In today’s match we played the team: ’3 Wrangs don’t make a right’. It turned out that 2 Wrangs didn’t do much wrong! In the first half they bid a slam after starting with a transfer at the one level. Björn made a Lightner double. The only problem was that he himself should make the lead. And when he finally realized that and led the Queen of hearts, dummy went down but nothing happened for a long time. It turned out that declarer was as much confused as he though partner was declarer. When he eventually understood that he should play the hand, though, he had no problems to cash 12 tricks.
Another slam was bid by the Wrangs’ wings, Johan Sylvan and Mårten Gustawsson at the other table, while we stopped in 5S. Fredins lead-directing double probably helped NS to bid the slam.
Look at the bidding of the same hand at both tables:

2NT showed a positive hand without support, and 5C a cue-bid, but we did not go all the way.
The first half was no success for our team, and Wrang took the lead by 30-4. The second half started in the same way. After 8 boards we had lost 23 more, before the opponents saved us with this board:

This was a very lucky board for us, as the opponents had an expensive misunderstanding in the bidding. 2S showed a two-suiter with hearts and another suit. Joppe tried to show 6 hearts and 5 diamonds with the redouble, but Mårten took it for a strong redouble. The defence was far from perfect, but the result was still 5 down and 2200 to us. At the other table they played in 3D doubled with one down. Without those 19 IMPs we would have lost very big but now the second half was about even. I will make no jokes about Stockholm bridge players today. These guys where simply playing better than us!
